Host Farmers: Noah Link & Alex Bryan, Food Field, Detroit, MI
Guest Chef: Sarah Welch, Detroit, MI
Last year, our Michigan stop was Sunseed Farm in the suburban/rural region outside Ann Arbor. This year, guest chef Sarah Welch suggested we head into the big city to check out what’s going on with urban agriculture. Food Field is an urban farm on four acres in central Detroit. Since 2011, farmers Noah Link and Alex Bryan have worked to transform this abandoned elementary school site into a bountiful farm. Today, they grow all kinds of vegetables and tend a young orchard of 100+ fruit trees, over 50 laying hens, a pond of 500 catfish and bluegill, and hives of honeybees.
